FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
This is my First massage, what do I wear?
Traditional massage techniques and Structural Integration requires you to wear only your underwear. However, there are several techniques and modalities I use that can be performed through clothing. If you choose to wear clothes, t-shirts and shorts are ideal. I can work through most types of material, if you have to return to work following the session.
What is Medical Massage?
Medical Massage is result oriented and the treatment is specifically directed to resolve conditions that have been diagnosed and prescribed by a Physician. The therapist may use a variety of modalities or procedures during the treatment, but will focus the Medical Massage treatment only on the areas of the body related to the diagnosis and prescription. (Email me for a sample Physician's Script you can present to your Doctor.)
What are Advanced Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques (MAT)?
An incorporation of muscle-balancing techniques with joint-mobilization maneuvers. Myoskeletal alignment technique (MAT) is a type of bodywork which blends the principles of osteopathy and structural integration to relieve chronic pain, and to reduce the potential for the emergence of pain which could become chronic over time. This technique is often integrated into my regular massage and bodywork sessions, and it can also be used alone to treat systemic problems. Practitioners of myoskeletal alignment technique can be found in many regions of the world. The focus of this technique is on back and neck pain in particular, since this type of pain is extremely common in the industrialized world.
Insurance Coverage info:
Massage therapy may be covered by your health insurance. Many times a prescription is required from your doctor. It is best to check with your insurance company to find out what their requirements are. “Deep tissue massage’ or “Myofacial release.” I will be happy to supply you with a receipt, although I am not set up to bill insurance companies directly. (Email me for a sample Physician's Script you can present to your Doctor.)
What is Palliative Massage?
Palliative massage is for clients who suffer from incurable conditions, such as cancer, muscular dystrophy, fibromyalgia, etc. The goal is to relieve pain and insomnia.
What is Sinus Relief Massage?
Sinus Relief Massage is a modified form of Manual Lymphatic Drainage. It assists the flow of lymphatic fluid through the sinus cavities to break up and flush out the excess fluid.
Is There Paperwork?
Yes. I will ask you to fill out a Health Intake/Consent form. A brief postural analysis exam and Range of Motion measurements may be taken for Medical Massage clients who commit to a 3-6 session treatment plan package.
Will I be sore after my massage?
The application of Deep Tissue massage is usually described by clients as a “Good Hurt.” The goal is not to exceed a 7 on a pain scale (0-10, 0=No Pain at All; 10=Worst Pain You have ever had.) Any pain above a 7 is counterproductive, and the body begins to resist the treatment.
Deep tissue massage sometimes will result in tenderness in the area worked 24-48 hours following the treatment. It is a productive soreness similar to the tenderness you may feel after exercise.
Do you offer other types of massage?
Yes. In addition to Deep Tissue and Structural Integration massage, I have studied Reflexology in both the hands and feet, Comfort Touch for Geriatric clients, Pre and Postnatal, Sports massage techniques such as PNF stretching and Ortho Bionomy. I offer a 15 minute Sinus Relief session based on Manual Lymphatic Drainage. I also offer traditional Swedish massage for clients only interested in relaxation.
